Does Acupuncture Hurt?

This is by far the most common question I get asked. Most people associate acupuncture needles with their experience of getting vaccinations or having blood drawn. An acupuncture needle is significantly smaller than a hypodermic needle used in a doctor’s office. Most patients report that acupuncture is not painful. I have many other techniques I can use, if you would like to avoid the needles.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

The mechanism of acupuncture has been studied for the past 60 years. There is still much to understand about how it works, but here is what is understood so far. Acupuncture activates your nervous system and through this connection lessens pain signals and relaxes muscles. The neural pathways from acupuncture point to the pain centers in the brain have been mapped. Acupuncture stimulates the body to make its own natural pain killers, which are chemically similar to opioids. Other biochemicals involved in pain reduction are also released such as ATP, GABA, and substance P. Because acupuncture works with the body’s natural ability to stop the pain it is safer than pharmaceuticals.

Some examples of covered conditions include back pain, neck pain, and knee pain, etc. While acupuncture treats so much more than this, other health complaints are not covered.
